On July 11th I was involved in a serious accident. En route to Boise, ID from Stanley, ID on Scenic Highway 21 I encountered a soft patch of freshly laid asphalt while negotiating a corner which caused my bike to skid. I was able to recover control quickly, however I immediately found myself in the way of oncoming traffic. My options were either hit the oncoming car head on or swerve left and go off-road. I opted to swerve off-road and went over a very steep 60ft embankment into the Payette River, but not before colliding with a very large Pine.

Thankfully I had all of my protective gear on and was being followed by 2 motorcyclists who drug me from the river and called 911 in short time. I was air-lifted to Saint Alphonsus hospital in Boise where it was determined that my right ankle is fractured with a torn tendon, and my right lung suffered a tiny puncture. The rest of my body, especially the right side, is pretty banged up to say the least, but nothing serious. On the 19th I have an appointment with an ankle specialist to determine whether I require surgery. If I do, I will have the procedure done here in Boise, if I do not I will fly back to NH recuperate.

The bike is a total loss and my ankle will need a minimum of 8 weeks to recover thus ending this 2-wheeled tour of N America. Sooner than later I will be back in the saddle for another try.

7/19/10: With time on my side my Doctor has advised me to put a cast on my ankle and let the fractures/tear heal naturally. In 8 weeks I'll have a catscan to check on the progress.

Every now and then I'm reminded why I chose a dual-sport bike over a chrome-clad Harley. This dirt road outside of Oacama, SD went on for miles and had a speed limit of 55mph.
